Brian Campbell and Dave Bolland each notched a goal and an assist as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1.

Andrew Ladd, Patrick Sharp and rookie Kris Versteeg also netted, while Martin Havlat and Patrick Kane each had two assists for the Blackhawks, who last won eight in a row from January 4 to 21 in 1981.

Captain Mike Richards netted his 15th goal of the season and Martin Biron made 33 saves for the Flyers.

Vernon Fiddler scored with just over one minute remaining in the second period and Dan Ellis made 38 saves as the Nashville Predators recorded a 3-2 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings in a battle of Central Division rivals.

Defenceman Greg Zanon and Kevin Klein also found the back of the net and Martin Erat notched two assists for Nashville.

Daniel Cleary and Mikael Samuelsson scored for Detroit, who saw six-time Norris Trophy winner Niklas Lidstrom leave the game in the second period with a lower body injury.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 37 saves and Ruslan Fedotenko scored what proved to be the winner midway through the second period as the Pittsburgh Penguins blanked the New Jersey Devils 1-0.

Alex Ovechkin continued his excellent form with his 23rd goal of the season as the Washington Capitals skated to a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Ovechkin scored after Viktor Kozlov and Donald Brashear netted goals for the Capitals, who have won seven of their last eight games.

Eric Staal claimed the sixth hat-trick of his career as the Carolina Hurricanes recorded a 5-4 triumph over the Atlanta Thrashers in a battle of Southeast Division rivals.

Chad LaRose and Patrick Eaves also scored and Ray Whitney notched three assists for Carolina.

Bryan Little grabbed a hat-trick, Todd White also scored and Vyacheslav Kozlov had four assists for Atlanta.

Shawn Horcoff and defenceman Sheldon Souray both scored on two-man advantages in the second period as the Edmonton Oilers held on for a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Dwayne Roloson made 26 saves and Marc Pouliot opened the scoring for the Oilers.

Captain Shane Doan scored a goal and set-up another to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

Peter Mueller also found the back of the net and Ilya Bryzgalov made 24 saves for the Coyotes.

Veteran Bill Guerin scored twice to record the 400th goal of his career as the New York Islanders ended a 10-game losing streak with a 4-1 triumph over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Defenceman Steve Eminger recorded a goal and two assists and Ryan Malone converted the shoot-out winner to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers.

Veteran Mark Recchi and Evgeny Artyukhin also scored in normal time for the Lightning.
